Embodying True Faith
I knew a man who put his blood, sweat, tears, and faith into his business and money. He worked hard and struggled to make a living, so he could live a comfortable, secure, and wealthy life. His entire life he was educated and conditioned to make a lot of money and retire with fulfillment and happiness. Sound familiar?
Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan. One economic failure after another and his personal mistakes drove him out of business, into debt, and into depression. How could I not succeed, he thought? I’m a well educated man, I own a business, I have investments in real estate, and I started a 401k plan, isn’t that the recipe for success?
The person I’m talking about is me. And, I’m sure you can relate.
You want fulfillment, comfort, security, and happiness- isn’t that what everyone wants? However, when you put your faith and sense of security in conventional structures- your job, business, retirement, and money – you only receive the illusion of security and fulfillment.
When your faith is misplaced, the sense of "something is missing in my life" will always be present. Dysfunction will set in and the need for more and more will consume you.
It took many months of suffering and contemplation to even begin understanding life and how I fit into it. One puzzle piece would fit with the next and then I couldn’t find the other pieces. But I knew deep down inside that there is freedom from suffering.
The greatest insight that I’m absolutely sure about is that everything external in this world is impermanent. When your faith and security reside in what happens to you in life or what you gain (or fail to gain), you will suffer and add dysfunction to the world.
The only thing permanent in life is the Absolute Source that makes up Life- Big Mind. When you have true faith and trust, your attention is firmly rooted with Big Mind and you realize you are Life itself and not separate from it; therefore, you lack nothing and abundance can’t help but find you.
